Friday Night Runners Usher Out The Millenium

Twenty-eight runners ushered out 1999 with a Friday night 5 mile race. Many of the same people showed up the next morning at Courtney Bird's "Hangover Classic" the following morning to welcome in the year 2000. In honor of the last run of the millennium, Courtney Bird's starters cannon was commandeered to start the race. The blast was so loud, it caused most of the field to race through the first mile in faster than normal times.

Jeff List again ran early in the day on his own; however, this week his time did not stand up for first place. Bill O'Mara and Duncan Smith-Rohrberg chased Ken Gartner across the line, while David Whitney and Steve Hamel took 4th and 5th. Jane Zee-Zoufaly, who was making only her second Friday Night 5 appearance, was the first woman in the last Friday Night 5 of the century. Karen Smith-Rohburg and Jessica Baker followed in 2nd and 3rd. Susan Jolie and Judy Keller rounded out the top 5, and they were separated by only 10 seconds.

Afterwards, the runners found themselves trapped in Town Hall Square for a while as the New Year's Ever parade commenced down Main Street. Where but in Falmouth can you run a 5 mile race at night on a beautiful scenic course and than be entertained by a parade down Main Street?

The FTC Friday Night 5 Milers are held every Friday night at 5:30 from Town Hall Square in Falmouth. There is no charge for this self-timed event, but reflector vests are required. There will be no parade next week.
