Summer Sizzlers 8K Race #8

Springfield, MA, June 6, 2012

Summer Sizzlers 8K Race #8-Race Report & Top Performances

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report: June 6, 2012 is National Running Day and what better way to celebrate then to run the Summer Sizzler 8K in Forest Park! 31 runners showed up on this festive occasion under cloudy skies threatening rain, however conditions remained dry and 68F for the main event. After the ceremonial greeting and a few words of encouragement Ed Carroll clanged the opening bell and the field thundered down Main Greeting Road towards the roses.

There was a large lead pack jockeying for position at the first turn into the rose gardens. As the field made their way down the back-stretch it was the GSH quartet of Billy Carroll, Steve Virgadaula, Dan McNair and Carlos Rivera running four abreast leading the field onto Trafton Road. Nora Garrity gapped the women’s field by 50 meters leaving the park with the chase pack of GSH’s Colleen Cummings and Laura Pelczarski in hot pursuit.

The race continued on the streets of Springfield and Longmeadow before returning to Forest Park on the downhill towards the skate house. As the field re-emerged behind the snack shed it was Carlos in the lead with Billy Carroll and Sam Burke close behind. In the end it was Carlos taking the victory in 31:00 followed closely by Sam in 31:07 and Billy in 31:20. The win marked Carlos’s first victory of the season and record 62nd of his stellar career. His 62 career victories are 21 more than second place Celio Hernandez (41) on the all-time Hall of Fame win list. Sam Burke, 2nd overall, was the top Youth (0-19) finisher. Top Master (40-49) belonged to Mark Miller in 35:57, top Senior (5-59) was GSH’s Steve Virgadaula in 31:54 and GSH’s Seth Roberts took top Veteran (60-69) in 35:24. Rounding out the male scoring was SMAC’s Don Grant, grabbing top 70+ honors with a time of 49:39.

Nora Garrity led wire-to-wire for the women’s victory with a time of 35:47. This was Nora’s 1st victory of the season and 2nd of her Sizzler career. GSH’s Colleen Cumming placed 2nd female and top Master in 36:29 and Laura Pelczarski’s 38:00 was good for 3rd female and top Open (2-39). Vicki Quagliaroli, SS’s, completed the women’s scoring with a 51:44, good for top Master. Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Ed Carroll, Brian McCarthy and Gabby Lescarbeau. Short-handed with the rare absence of warhorse Bruce Kurtz, the remaining volunteers all stepped up their game to make sure everything ran smoothly. Thanks to all the runners and volunteers for a great race. I hope you all return next week as for race #9 in the series, the 5K XC race.
