Summer Sizzler 8K Race #10

Springfield, MA, June 20, 2012

Summer Sizzler 8K Race#10-Race Report

by Mike Lescarbeau, Race Director

Race Report: The racing gods were happy on this festive evening as summer was about to make its appearance official at 7:09 PM. Race #10 in the Summer Sizzler series kicked-off at 6:30 PM sharp under hazy skies, 95 degree temps oppressive humidity. Only the strongest harriers were cautioned to run in these conditions and 18 brave souls answered the call. After some brief instructions and well-wished from the race director Brian Goddu clanged the opening bell and the field was off.

It was a tight pack of runners cutting through their way through the thick air down the opening straightaway. GSH veteran Joe Fois (Joe Fois!!) led the charge alongside Dave Merkt and newcomer Dan Manuzzi. The small but feisty women’s field was led by Julie Carroll, Kathy “the trail whisperer” McCarthy and young Chela Hewes close behind.

Once the field left the park for Trafton road the legion of volunteers could only wait in anticipation to see who would emerge from the shadows of the ice cream shack. At long last it would be GSH’s Joe Fois leading the field down the backstretch. Joe broke the tape for victory in 32:27. The win marked Joe’s first victory of the season and 17th of his stellar career. Second overall was SS’s Dave Merkt in 33:48 with Dave Manuzzi finishing 3rd in 34:56. Age group award winners were GSH’s Cotton Hewes as top Youth (0-19), top Master (40-49) was Mark DeGrandpre in 40:24, top Senior (50-59) as well as our time prediction winner was GSH’s Kevin Pfau in 35:49 and SMAC’s Dave Martula claimed top Veteran (60-69) in 38:00.

In the race for the female title GSH’s Julie Carroll would not be denied. Julie’s led wire-to-wire with a winning time of 38:05. The win marked Julie’s 3rd of the season and 7th of her career, moving her into a tie with Mary Hernandez for 15th place on the all-time hall of fame list. GSH runners claimed the top three podium spots as Kathy McCarthy’s 43:17 earned her 2nd overall female and 9 year old Chela Hewes claimed 3rd overall female in 1:16:15.

Volunteers for the race were Brian Goddu, Bruce Kurtz, Ed Carroll (who double-dipped by running the race), Brian McCarthy and Mike Lescarbeau. Thanks to all the runners and volunteers who braved the heat on this night. Our race series continues next Wednesday, June 27th with the 5K XC race.
