Winter came early for the 73 hardy harriers that
finished the 9th annual HTC XC Challenge. With
temperatures in the low 20’s and a wind chill near zero, it was
no surprise that the race course was in mid-winter form – very
hard turf with sneaky ice patches spread throughout the route.
Despite taking a tumble in the first mile, Mark Hixson had no problem
with the rest of the course, cruising to the win in 28:11. On the
women’s side, Beth Krasemann continued her excellent year
racing in the New England trail series with a winning time of 33:03.
This is the final XC race
in the 3-race Fall series and it turned out to be a very tough battle
in both the open and masters divisions. The Hartford Track Club
squeezed by the Mohegan Striders 26-29 in the open race (top 5
runners score by place), but it was even tighter in the masters race
(top 3 runners) as both clubs compiled 12 points, but HTC’s
third runner was closer to the winner than Mohegan’s third
runner to take the win.
This race could not be
