Where else do you get to see historical and architectural delights while running a two mile bridge twice, visit four towns, and run on two islands and a beach? The SC Fat Ass Recovery From the Holidays puts together a top quality race while touring lots of cool places in the Charleston area. We try to put on one of the best races we can... and do it for free! The key is minimal advertising to keep it small and manageable.
We had twelve runners and trekkers start; a number of people stopped early as planned. A total of seven people completed the two events. Bill Keane of Winston-Salem, NC finished the 50 K course in a time of 5:52:07. John Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, SC finished second after fast trekking the course in 8:59:00
In the 50-mile event, first female was Leslie Trammell of Oak Ridge, TN in 10:18:54 (31 minutes faster than last year). Ray Krolewicz of Pontiac, SC was first male in 8:25:10.
The weather started off cool in the lower 40's With a NE wind blowing hard, the Cooper River Bridge was a cold place to be in the early morning. Fortunately, the sky stayed and around mid-day people were getting hot until some high clouds help cool the runners off again in the late afternoon. An unusually high tide made running on the beach a little awkward as people ran in soft sand for 3 miles with the wind in their faces. Their reward for not whining too much was the course had a low tide when they returned... with hard pack sand and the wind at their back!
For those unfamiliar with FA events, the guidelines for this race are: No fees, No awards, No aid, No whining and No wimps.
