Roundtree, Lang Top Run Through the Grapevine 8K
Howard County Junior Strider coach Anthony Fleg started out the Run Through
the Grapevine in first place, but Rick Roundtree of Springfield, VA, found
himself in front after about two miles "not because I sped up so much but
because the leaders slowed down." The former Bucknell cross country runner
bounded into first as the lead pack circled the little pond at the Linganore
Winery where the event took place. Roundtree had run the 8k cross country race
the year before and found the hills so tough that he said he wouldn't be back-
but he did. Once in front, he extended his lead and won the race in 27:34, two
minutes faster than in 2000. "I'll be back," he said when asked if he would
return in 2002.
The women's race saw a similar progression of events, as Vicki Lang overcame
the initial lead of Kerrie Bowes after a mile. Bowes made an attempt to regain
the lead ascending the treacherous Hill of Dirt, but fell short. Paced by Ray
Frankewich, who recently turned 40, Lang pulled away to win in 35:13. "He didn't
pace me so much as inspire me," Ms. Lang said. Montgomery County's Joe Abernethy
smothered the master men with a 28:42, two minutes ahead of second master Doug
Kuderna, while Lisa Fichman narrowly edged Dorothy Beckett for the women's
masters championship. Fichman had just entered the masters age category and had
to sprint past Beckett at the very end. The Grapevine 8k marked Fichman's first
cross country race, which she attempted only two weeks after running the
Baltimore Marathon. "I was worried about falling down," Fichman confided. The
Grapevine 8k featured all manner of team competitions, although they seemed to
be vying for the most colorful name rather than the fastest times. With three
members finishing with times under 30 minutes, "Ten Coaches Who Still Can"
posted the fastest times of all 18 registered teams and won the Men's Open
Division, but "The Snot Rocketeers" easily had the most distasteful name and
even if they did the Open Coed Division. "It was team mate's idea," said team
captain Brad Speierman. Other teams included the "Taste Testers" (a reference to
the Linganore Wingery), "Tri Harder" (consisting of triathletes), "Whipped Fish"
(named after the team leader David Fish), "Aged to Perfection" (the only coed
masters team), and "Only Young Once but Immature Forever" (who finished last in
the Male Masters Division).
Gerry Clapper directed the Run Through the Grapevine. The Howard County
Striders stage the race on every fall by the at the Linganore Winery, even
though it's not in Howard County at all. Mr. Clapper and the Striders thank
Anthony Aellen, the Winery owner, for use of his vineyards. Dave Tripp directed
the finish line, his third cross country finish line in three days. Nadia
Wasserman, Pat Brooks, and Pam West handled the registrations and also
participated on the "Sour Grapes" team that won the women's masters competition.
The race took place on the excellent fall morning of Sunday, November 4, and
drew a near-record field of 388. Overall winners received cash awards, while age
group winners received their choice of Linganore wines. Participants received a
multi-color long-sleeved t-shirt and a wine glass when they finished. After the
race, everyone enjoyed Cider Mill apples and cider, Bagel Bin bagels, and 16
different varieties of Mr. Clappers homebaked nut bread. "He had a freezer and
more pans this year," confided his wife, Caskie, about the baking operation.
