Ripley Butte Challenge Draws a Crowd

Beautiful weather and scenery thrilled 50 runners and walkers in the Fifth Annual Ripley Butte Challenge in Island Park's backcountry Saturday, July 7.

The challenge offers a run or walk opportunity for everyone, with distances of 13 miles, 100 yards (half marathon), and 10 km, 5 km, and one-mile.

In the male division, Brett Zundel, 34, of Terreton won the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 31 minutes, 50 seconds. Josh Loden, 16, of Joplin, MO. won the 10 k with a time of 35 minutes, 48 seconds; Joe Costello, of Alta, Wyo. won the 5 k with a time of 24 minutes, 49 seconds; and Piplica Spencer, 11, of Riverton, Wyo. won the one-mile event in 9 minutes, 43 seconds.

Top female finishers were Johnna French, 30, of Idaho Falls, finishing the half marathon in one hour, 41 minutes, 48 seconds; Tiffany Piplica, 16, of Riverton, crossing the 10k finish line in 49 minutes, 34 seconds; Linda Merrill, 43, of Harlowton, Mont., finishing the 5 k in 25 minutes, 53 seconds, and Hattie Calvert, 11, running the one-mile event in 9 minutes, 43 seconds.

Courses are on Targhee-Caribou National Forest roads off of the Chick Creek Road and parts of the half marathon run on Ripley Butte.

All participants received tee shirts and medals were awarded the top finishers.

The Island Park Area Chamber of Commerce sponsors the event. Brett Whitaker is the race director.

Whitaker said he was pleased with the turnout&emdash; up 30 percent from last year&emdash; and changes made in the course at the request of some of last year's elite runners. He said next year's event is set for Saturday, July 6, and he will send registration forms to those who request them&emdash;call him at (208) 558-7116.
