Mountain to Fountain 15K/5K

Fountain Hills, AZ, February 24, 2001

Results courtesy of 3 Disciplines Racing.

On behalf of  my cross-country and track team at Fountain Hills high school, and 3 disciplines racing  I would like to thank each and everyone of you for participating.  Please read the behind the scenes of this years event and what the future holds in store.

It all began last September when we had our fall sports coaching meeting at the high school.  At the end of the meeting our assistant principal told me that the Mountain to Fountain Race was not going to happen because the Kiwanis club went out of business(because of this event).  I immediately thought what a great fund raiser this would be for my teams.  With the growth and the popularity of the event it would be a huge success if 3 disciplines stepped in and took it to another level.   I started making the phone calls to talk with Kiwanis who owned it.  Finally in mid October after making over a dozen calls and it was returned with "the AZ Road Runners said they were going to vote on it by the end of October".  I asked if ARR voted it down if Kiwanis could call me so we could take the race over.  Well, Finally after another half dozen calls,  I got a call the week of Thanksgiving.  "They voted it down you can do the race if you want but I don't think you can pull it off in the given the time frame".   I spent the next three days getting everything in order.  The town gave me a verbal approval given my past reputation of hosting quality events in the area.   I called back that Thanksgiving eve and told the gentleman that it was a go, he said that it is going to be impossible etc. etc.  I said well it is on so then he said we (Kiwanis) will have to vote on the use of the name.   I said well I would change it to Mountain to Fountain Hills, if need be.  So no phone call back. About a week later I found out at a ARR event they voted on it in September.    After the Thanksgiving holiday I emailed every magazine and website to get the race back on the calendars.  few put it up, most of them emailed me back saying are you sure we heard it was cancelled?  I told them "it was we had taken it over", so that delay cost us a few print dates.  Now with the Christmas holiday looming the next daunting task was to try and get the sponsors back on such short notice before Christmas.  Most have been with the event for years so you would think it would be a simple task.    After a month of   calls and talks only two stepped up, the title sponsor MCO Properties and Spooner rehab.  A big THANK YOU to them!!   So we lost 20 sponsors, why?   "the only reason we gave was because we knew so and so that was in Kiwanis"   What do you say to that, they already said no.  Anyway I figured well we would probably get about half of last years total participants  because of the people at the foothills moving their race on our date, and the lack of advertisement so late into the game.  So I figured if we could break even with 350 people then next year we will make it "the event" to run at this time of year.  Well we were 73 athletes short of our goal but I am poised as always for the bigger and better comeback next year.

Night Before: As we were setting up about 9:30 p.m. I noticed there were no barricades on the side of the road.  So getting a little concerned I tried to get in touch with someone.  I could not so I went into the sheriffs office. After explaining my concern to the the dispatcher He called and woke the town road supervisor, I spoke with him for 30 minutes, then we had to wake the town Marshall, who said the town had no barricades left because of the Fair, I would need to get it taken cae of with my equipment.  So I went home at about 1:am to get our bike racks which we use  for multi-sport events, then throughout the rest of the evening/morning wind gusts of 30 plus mph made set up extremely difficult.  We had at one point two of tents rolling in the field next to the parking lot.  Then about 5:45 a.m. one of the kids pickups responsible for getting 300 plus cones on the course broke down in the park.  I am sure many of you ran past it about the 3 mile mark.  So I had to give them my truck "ouch" :-).  At 6:00a.m. the gates to the back side of the park were still not open so the track kids could not get in to set up the start line equipment and beverage tables.  At 6:30 the busses arrive but only 4, now we have a problem. As I glanced over at the registration tables and there are only about 10 people, I remembered being told by the Kiwanis that the first bus must leave by 6:40.  By 6:50, there were more athletes so we began making the announcements to get on the busses.   Then the bus drivers tell me they do not know what is happening.  Their supervisor did not inform them of the many changes to the event this year.  At 7:00 still not enough athletes to fill a bus, so we said 7:20, at that point I knew we were in trouble.
As I drove out in front of the busses on the way to the park and in the park going the speed limit and watched them drop further and further behind I said O boy now we will be late.  It took the busses about 40 minutes to get to the park.  While driving I noticed a few of the mile markers were put on last years white marks, not our red ones.  Then, as I got to the park I am informed that there will not be a road closure because three other officers have the flu, and we were lucky to get the one we had, he came from Cave Creek, so THANK YOU POSSE!  Then as we drove in the park we did not get above 25 mph.   So it was 7:40a.m. at that point I said "well it has to go off by 8:30".  I flew back to the start of the 5k, were I was confronted with a nice comment right before I started the race saying something to the effect of "Great organization" So I said "well when no one is on the busses till 7:20 I have no control", he I am sure knew nothing pertaining to what had taken place to that point.  Anyway the 5k started promptly at 8:am, 15 minutes behind.  Then I flew to make sure everyone was picked up at the finish with the last bus.  Flew out to the start to get started at 8:35.  Last the comments pertaining to the distance, it will be certified next year, the bottom line with that is we did not have the resources, nor the time this year given the lack of sponsors and the numbers being below pre registration goals.  We pulled this race off basically in 8 weeks

Again THANK YOU everyone, If any of you have done any of our other events you know we are 100% quality and put on a great event. This was just obviously one of those days,   I being the race director had no control over what happened in a succession of events, but I know it is my duty to find and fix any and all possible problems. I believe I did although I still cannot get it out of my head.   As I mentioned we have plans in the works already for some really cool things next year with music at every water stop, a team relay event, and some others that will be a surprise. An out and back type 5k to alleviate that problem.   Please put us on the calendar it will always be this weekend, the weekend of the Great Fair.

Good Health to all and hope to see you out at future 3- d events, happy training, Kenny!
