NORTH YORK'S ELIZABETH CARMICHAEL WINS 10K RUN IN THE AVON RUNNING - TORONTO EVENT

Overall winners from 16-country circuit to compete at Global Championship in New York
Toronto, ON (July 5, 1998) --- Elizabeth Carmichael of North York won the inaugural Avon Running Toronto 10K run today and will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Avon Running - Global Championship event.
The Global Championship race features the largest prize purse - $50,000 US - in women's 10K running. The event will be held in New York City in the spring of 1999.
Carmichael, 37, covered the 10K distance with a time of 35:55 and was followed closely by Paula Davlan (36:31) and Marion Schoeler (37:01). Davlan, 27, is a resident of Aurora, Ontario and Schoeler, 32, lives in Toronto.
Also qualifying for the all-expenses paid trip to the Global Championship event were Hazel Greavette, top Avon Sales Dealer and Joyce Switzer, top Master runner (40 years of age and older) both in the 10K.
The event was held in ideal weather conditions and attracted a total of 940 women of all ages and abilities to the 10K run and 5K fitness walk. More than 65 prizes and awards were given out to women in 15 age categories as well as mother daughter teams during a post-race party in the courtyard at Commerce Court.
The Avon Running - Global Women's Circuit is the only running program that simultaneously reaches out to women of all ages with the opportunity to participate in elite racing, recreational running or simple fitness - in one international circuit. The event will take place in 16 countries worldwide - Toronto has been chosen to play host to the first Canadian event on the circuit.
